Clinical Study of the Liver Abscess

Abstract
A series of the liver abscess who underwent drainage operation at the department of Surgery of Chonnam University Hospital during the years 1960-1966 have been analized.
1) Among the total cases, the liver abscess were 5.5%.
2) Of 145 cases, 56.5% was amebic liver abscess and 43.5% was pyogenic. The ratio was 3 to 2. The sex incidence was 4 males to 1 female and great preponderance was thirty to fourty decade.
3) The right lobe was more commonly attacked(89.7%) than left lobe(6.2%). In 7.7% of cases, both lobe have been attacked at same time. The solitary Abscess were observed in 67% of the cases in majority of amebic abscess.
4) In amebic abscess, the duration of illness was longer than in pyogenic. In all cases, pain over the right upper abdomen and fever were complained and over 95% of cases hepatomegaly was present.
5) Liver functions were mildly disturbed in amebic abscess in generally. In majority of cases, mild anemia was present.
6) In amebic abscess E. histolitica was detected in 6.2% and in pyogenic, positive culture of staphylococci, E. coli. or streptococci were present in 67.2%.
7) In amebic abscess, 50% of cases ave or have ben experienced history of amebic infection. In pyogenic, 42.8% of cases have previous history of pyogenic infection.
8) Complications were observed in 39.1% of cases and mortality rate was 11.0%, in amebic 3.7% and in pyogenic 20.6%.
